The 5th Asian Beach Games (ABG5) will take place in Da Nang only, instead of the 3 localities comprised of Da Nang and the provinces of Khanh Hoa and Binh Thuan as previously scheduled. The information was announced at the meeting of the National Steering Board for ABG5 hosted by the Minister for Culture, Sports and Tourism of Viet Nam, Mr. Hoang Tuan Anh.
The Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) decided to choose only one locality for organising the event to reduce the costs for Viet Nam – the organiser, and facilitating the travel of participating countries.
ABG5 will take place on the beach area with a length of 5,000m stretching from Son Tra District’s Man Thai Ward to Ngu Hanh Son District’s Hoa Hai Ward from 24th September to 3rd October 2016. It is anticipated that about 4,590 athletes and coaches from 45 countries and territories will participate in the sporting event.
ABG5 will have 14 sports, including: Aquatics (Marathon Swimming and Water Polo); Beach Kabaddi; Beach Soccer; Beach Volleyball; Beach Handball; 3×3 Basketball; Beach Sepak takraw; Beach Martial Arts (Wrestling, Sambo, Jujitsu, Kurash, Pencak Silat, Vovinam, Muay Thai, Vietnamese Traditional Martial Arts); Beach Badminton; Beach Petanque; Beach Bodybuilding; Woodball; Rowing and Athletics.
The OCA also approved the official logo and mascot for the 5th Asian Beach Games. The mascot features a salangane, a typical bird of the southern central coast of Viet Nam, whilst the logo is designed to represent sand and waves in the shape of young, healthy and dynamic athletes playing sports with the OCA’s symbol inside.
